The college essay is a milestone. Unfortunately, it can also be a trial. While there is no shortage of advice for how best to succeed at this particular trial, there may be a shortage of support. Right now, families all over the country are feeling the excitement that comes with the beginning of their child’s senior year in high school. And many of them are also feeling the stress of the college application process. Few aspects of the application process can increase that stress more than writing the essays.

That’s where I come in. My name is Geoff Amidei. I am a facilitator, presentation and speaker coach, storytelling expert, writer, and editor. For more than 25 years, I’ve been helping people tell their stories better.

I will coach and support your student through the writing of their college essays, so you don’t have to.

Whether your student feels overwhelmed and doesn’t know where to start, or they’re having trouble fitting their ideas to the word count, or they just need a supportive editor and sounding board, I can help.

PROCESS

My process is based on my belief that everyone has a unique story to tell, but they sometimes need help finding it. I think of myself as an essay archeologist: My job is to help excavate the essay. Here’s my basic process:

Step 1: Survey the site

This is where I get to know the student and where best to dig to find the treasures (their unique experiences and ideas) that will make a great essay.

Step 2: Begin the dig

Together, we unearth the various artifacts and look at them in the light to decide which we want to work with. This is a form of brainstorming.

Step 3: Outline and draft

Here we assemble the experiences, details, and ideas (i.e., the artifacts we’ve uncovered) that show who the student truly is.

Step 4: Polish the find

This is where we clean, burnish, and iterate the draft into a standout 650-word essay.

Cost:

$200.00 per single session

$550.00 for a three-session package. (While a single session will be valuable, three sessions allow more time for the process to work according to its design.)
